BUILDING COMMUNITIES TO END POVERTY

If each of us takes part in caring and sharing, the overwhelming challenge of poverty can be addressed. Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much.

With the onset of drought in 19 provinces across the country, hunger is increasingly felt by the very people who work hard to put food on our tables. In response, we are declaring Operation Walang Iwanan: #ElNino ACTIVATED! Below are the latest updates from the ground:

May 5, 2016 (2:31pm)

Dindo Tapican, GK Resident, GK M'lang, North Cotabato. A community of B'laan Tribe. The community used to harvest around 800 kilos of tilapia per year in this communal fishpond.

Because of the drought, everything dried up. Now most of them rely on making charcoal and sell them just to have food in the table.

Even if it will rain today, they will have to wait for 3 months before they can harvest. If you can, please continue supporting the feeding relief operations for El Niño. P15 pero meal per person per day.

May 4, 2016 (2:38pm)

We will be opening 2 more areas in Mindanao for the Kusina ng Kalinga in the next 2 weeks. Thank you to all those who contributed but we still have a long way to go. We have 10 more areas that we need to reach...let us not tire in sharing, we all can end hunger for many more families even just for the next 60 days if we just encourage everyone that p15 can end hunger for a day.

"Ako'y gigising at babangon kahit sang lugar dalhin, tutulong at di mang iiwan kahit pa na dumilim.

Bukas palad na inaabot itong aking mga kamay kahit pa sa hirap at pagod ay di ako sanay, pero mula noon hanggang ngayon ay di bumibitaw pagka't sa pag tulong ang LIGAYA ay laging na tatanaw."

‪Operation Walang Iwanan - El Niño Update (April 26, 2016) from Kuya Luis Oquinena, GK Executive Director

"El Nino continues to challenge the water source and the food source of thousands of farmer-families especially in Mindanao. Some are protesting in the highways of South Cotabato in Mindanao just to be heard. I can't blame them. Hunger will drive every parent to think of extreme measures to feed their child. Each meal is p15, if we care and share enough, there will be less children going hungry, more parents thinking of ways on how to be productive. Walang iwanan!"

‎‪‎Why don't we focus on [one of the] our major problem of the Philippines [today], the El Niño that almost affect all part of our country, most especially [in] Mindanao.

Our kapatid there are almost dying because they don't have enough water supply to feed there crops and vegetables. They [are] facing the crisis called drought.

But thank God for Gawad Kalinga Operation Walang Iwanan - El Niño.

We visited some of the El Niño-affected areas in Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat, Philippines. This picture is the actual food feeding of Gawad Kalinga on Sitio Ogiz.

Help fight hunger! P15 can already provide a child one meal.

‪Operation Walang Iwanan - El Niño Update (April 22, 2016)We visited some of the El Niño-affected areas in Sultan Kudarat and North Cotabato.

This used to be a communal fishpond of the B'laan tribe where they used to get around 800 kilos of tilapia in a year. It dried up last January due to El Niño.

‎Last day of KnK Training for Operation Walang Iwanan El Niño:

Applying what they have learned for the past 2 days - our new KnK teams specially built to respond to hunger in El Niño affected areas - ran the show today and fed 200+ kids in Tacurong Pilot Elementary School.

Hindi sunog ang kanin, infairness para sa first time!

‪As hunger looms in many parts of the country brought by the El Nino phenomenon, some volunteers have taken up the challenge to feed and care for the hungry. Here in Sultan Kudarat, we are training the first batch of volunteers from Zamboanga del Norte, Bukidnon, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat who will lead the feeding of children in remote areas affected by the drought.

Our deep gratitude to partners, donors and volunteers who are fueling this disaster response.

You, too, can help and be part of this urgent campaign. We need to reach out to more remote areas that are in great need. "Hunger ends where caring begins."

We spent time with the Talaandigs last week during the Bayani Challenge in Lantapan, Bukidnon, and we saw firsthand how El Niño has impacted their community. How hunger has been increasingly felt, and how they continue to find ways to cope. Despite this they were very welcoming and generous to share with us their culture and their way of life. They cared for us even if it wasn’t the best of times....

We may have wrapped up Bayani Challenge in Bukidnon last week, but the real challenge of Walang Iwanan - of leaving no one behind, has just begun. Through our bayanihan, we can reach our target of distributing 300,000 meals not just for the Talaandigs, but also for the many children, elderly, and nursing mothers affected by this drought. Each P15 can go a long way and make a difference. This is our opportunity to show them we care. Hunger ends where caring begins.

‪Sa tindi ng sikat ng araw, may malaking anino ng gutom. What we know of hunger will never be be nowhere near to what the farmers and their families are experiencing. This El Nino is most real in communities who have so little to begin with.

We have an opportunity here to care for the farmers who've always provided the food on our tables. Each P15 can go a long way and make a difference. Let's work and care together. Hunger ends where caring begins

GK Operation Walang Iwanan El Niño is now ACTIVATED!

Dear friends,We have faced storms and earthquakes. Many of us responded because we were moved with visible images of disaster victims. Hunger is unlike any other disaster. It is slow, persistent and difficult to spot. Many children, elderly and nursing mothers experience hunger amongst us. We read the statistics, we watch the news but we very... seldom see the faces...the only way to find the hungry is to feed them.

Gawad Kalinga will undertake an anti hunger campaign initially in drought affected provinces of our country. The hope is to establish a continuing campaign to care for the hungry in a more holistic way. We will build Kusina ng Kalinga in the different areas of the country to address hunger beyond feeding.

I invite everyone to start caring and sharing so we can end hunger.
