Dear Mission Friends,

Our nation and the rest of the global community are facing a common crisis that will demand collective global action and aggressive local campaigns against the spread and impact of COVID-19. We are facing a crisis unlike any other — the impact is widespread, the footprint is invisible, and the consequence of action or inaction are lives lost or saved. For the poor, hunger is a reality brought about by limited or restricted mobility.

Each one of us is faced with a personal decision that will have an impact on the collective. We can decide that:

The transmission stops with me.
By observing physical distancing, strict personal hygiene and following official government protocols, we can cut the chain. This is probably the greatest act that one can do during this crisis.

Stay at home but help our homeland.
Each family has a duty to contribute to the common good. Make sure that our neighbor who may have difficulty putting food on their table will not go hungry. Contribute to credible groups helping the poor and the frontliners.

Fear is real, but God is with us in this fight.
Faith in God, inspiring hope from each other, love for country will empower us to overcome COVID-19.

Gawad Kalinga is mounting OPERATION “WALANG IWANAN, WALANG HAWAAN” (LEAVE NO ONE BEHIND BUT LEAVE COVID-19 BEHIND). The goal of the campaign is to bring relief and help those in need while managing the transmission of the virus to a minimum (if not zero) in our processes and execution.

COVID-19 is a painful reminder for everyone. Rich, poor, the powerful, the famous, and the ordinary can be infected. We now must go back to that fundamental truth — that all are created equal in worth and dignity in the eyes of God. We have to start relating with each other with this fundamental truth if we want to win this war against COVID-19.

May we find the strength and humility to care and share so that no one amongst us will be left behind nor forgotten!

Mabuhay!
Kuya Luis

TOGETHER, WE CAN BEAT COVID-19. WALANG IWANAN, WALANG HAWAAN!

“To love is to give, with all your heart. The communal store stockholders of Handumanan Trafigura GK Village has decided to temporarily close the business and share their stocks to every household. Since the lockdown, most of them have not been able to go to work in Roxas City and nearby municipalities. During their Kapitbahayan (GK homeowners) meeting today, they came to an agreement to close, share to all and in the future, reinvest and return their share to revive their communal store when the lockdown has been lifted. They pray that by the power of God, our country will overcome this crisis.

“Yes ma’am, every night, naga rosary gud kami. I hope all family naga pray man kay nagapangayo man ko sa ila bulig sa pagpangamuyo kay indi na ini tili-awan nga problema. Kabay nga matapos na ini nga kalalat an sa labing madali paagi sa gahom sang mahal nga Dios ma’am,” says Tita Aileen Brillantes, KB President’s wife and GK Kabuhayan Program Manager.

Bayanihan at work, in good and in bad times, even in prayer. Lord, we trust in YOU. Be with us until we heal as one.”

- Tita Jessica Veronique O. Yu, Gawad Kalinga Visayas worker

Bayanihan + prayers = survival. Seek God above all else and He will graciously bless us with mercy. Walang iwanan, walang hawaan!

- Tito Dale Lugue, Gawad Kalinga Luzon worker

Walang iwanan, walang hawaan!

Look at the mothers from GK Sacred Heart Village, Brgy. Nanyo, Panabo, Davao del Norte carefully sewing hope for the young. Our nanays are set to give fabric face masks for all the GK kids. Their appeal to the public: stay at home and pray!

DIY (do-it-yourself) projects against COVID-19 are recently gaining steam. The bayanihan spirit in the GK communities never ceases to amaze us. They are now activators of the caring and sharing culture within their villages. Walang iwanan, walang hawaan!

“Gawad Kalinga never shirks away opportunities to help. Thanks to its GK Workers, Jun Degayo and Burt Brutus Y. Gellamucho, now themselves on the frontline ferrying nurses, medical staff, and citizens around the City of Tacurong. Big thanks to Kap Jose Beng Lim V and Kagawad Kate Donton.”

- Tito Noel Griño, Gawad Kalinga Mindanao worker

Bayanihan on wheels — a manifestation of our promise of not leaving anyone behind. This is our simple way of supporting the frontliners. Here’s to healing as one. Walang iwanan, walang hawaan!

“GK turned over the first installment of the reusable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) locally made for the frontliners of Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) in Southern Leyte received by Provincial Board Member Tata Estrera and Emergency Operations Center Manager and PDRRMO Chief Danilo Atienza. The rest of the PPEs will be turned over to Salvacion Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH) in Maasin.”

We have plenty of Vitamin P (proactive) in store. This is only a preview of hope seeping through the cracks of the pandemic. Together, we can beat COVID-19. Walang iwanan, walang hawaan!

A boatload of hope has docked at our SM GK communities in Caloocan City. Thank you, Tita Thess, for sharing this kalinga story. Walang iwanan, walang hawaan!
