Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) made landfall in the Philippines last Nov 8 and did no holding back in causing widespread grief and devastation. Haiyan took 6,201 lives (Source: NDRMCC Update as of January 29) in the 4 days that it pummeled through the countryside. Thousands have been left injured, and worse, without homes and a source of livelihood.
At the same time, Haiyan's aftermath has broughtthe Filipino to its core: relationships that refuse to leave each other behind. We witnessed in the past few months how Filipinos and even other nations have connected to the pain of our people and responded to the call of 'walang iwanan'. Thanks to your generosity and heroism, we opened 2014 by repairing and rebuilding homes in Cebu, Iloilo, and Leyte. We have also repaired the fishing boats of hundreds of fishermen in Cebu and Iloilo. In the course of the next few months, the journey will become more intense as we mobilize in more areas and raise 1 MILLION VOLUNTEERS through the Bayani Challenge, to rebuild Pilipinas this summer!

Thanks to your immediate response since we activated Operation Walang Iwanan for Typhoon Yolanda, we have personally handed out ~100,000 FOOD PACKS (~6 meals for a family of 5) in ~75 towns across 8 provinces. For more updates on our Relief Operations, click HERE.
We have also started rebuilding, and are gearing up for what we estimate to be a three-year commitment. So far, we have identified ~1,500 safe and secure lots for rebuilding, keeping us on-track in our plans to build the same number of homes by June 2014. Rebuilding is currently ongoing in Cebu, Iloilo, and Leyte. For more updates on our Rebuilding, click HERE.
The first 100 boats have already been completed and are not out to sea, helping over 100 fisherfolk in Northern Cebu get back on their feet. For the full story of GK Balangay, click HERE.

Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) is the third major crisis Philippines has had to face in the last 3 months. It was preceded by an earthquake in Bohol and an armed conflict in Zamboanga, also resulting in a loss of lives and displacement of thousands of families. GK is resolved to include them in the plans and campaigns for rebuilding.
Every time disasters occur, Gawad Kalinga volunteers and partners respond heroically by sharing resources, organizing relief drives, helping network to others, and even taking part in reconstruction efforts. Read about GK’s most recent disaster response efforts here:
