"Dream beyond your exams, aspire beyond your graduation. Young as you are, we are inviting you to have the courage to dream for a better future. Being successful is helping others succeed."

- Luis Oquiñena, GK Executive Director

ZAMBOANGA (Zamboanga City)

Bayanihan is in full force here in Zamboanga City, as everyone responds to the challenge of Barangay Walang Iwanan. Taking the lead is our Kapitbahayan from GK Tulungatong, who are working hand in hand with volunteers from various sectors to build new homes and bring hope for even more families.

Even the kids from the community are doing their part, showing us that no one is too young to make a difference. These are the future builders of GK Tulungatong!

"Tumulong kami magbuhat nang hollow block para mas madali matapos ang pagtransfer nito at ang trabaho."

— Magkapatid na si

Elmer Boy Bantug, 6yrs. old

and
Fernan "Dodong" Bantug, 3yrs.old

"Paglaki ko po gusto ko po maging sundalo at humawak nang pala. Para kagaya nila tutulong ako maghukay nang balon para makatulong."

— Rich John Guelos,

5yrs. old

This is what we call Bayanihan. It's about mainstreaming the culture of caring and sharing. Mapabata ka man, o mapamatanda, mapasundalo man o mapacivilian, mapaChristian man o Muslim basta para sa Diyos at Bayan ito'y di hadlang:

"Masaya, masarap! Experience is great. Isang paraan para maipakita at maipadama lalo na sa aming dalawang anak na ang spiritu nang #‎Bayanihan ay buhay pa."

— Jen San Pablo, DOT Basilan

and husband Lito San Pablo, TRADOC AFP

Mangrove Planting

Even the Coast Guard of Cawit were ready to give their full support: "Personnel of this Sub-station, headed by our C,GSSC together with MEPEUSWM and CGSZ pers joined the GAWADKALINGA 2015 River Clean-up and Mangrove planting at Rio de Cawit Barangay Cawit Zamboanga City, wherein 1,500 propagules were planted."

Paraisong Pambata

The children of Brgy. Cawit also got treated to Paraisong Pambata, where volunteers spent time with them and brought joy to their day.

At the end of the day, everyone who participated brought home so much more than what they bargained for. Here are some testimonies from our real-life bayanis who just experienced a summer they will always remember:

"Enjoy, maraming nakilala at naging kaibigan!
Kailangan talaga ang cooperation at bayanihan, pagtutulungan for a better future..
Posible talagang ma-end ang poverty through our unity. Paminsan kasi dahil yan sa culture natin pero unti-unti ma-end‪‎ talaga an‪‎‬g poverty."

— ASHM TOM ALLEN OLIVEROS,

Philippine Navy

"Masaya at enjoy kasi marami kaming nakilala. At masarap pala magtrabaho kahit di po namin kilala ang titira dito."

— PVT ALEX CINCO
PN,

Philippine Marines

"I'm here because I want to volunteer. From the very first place di tayo magkakilala. We are different people with different customs but because of this activity, those differences come up as one, having one aim which is to ‪#‎EndPoverty‬. I'm volunteering because I want to help individuals who are in need. Even though I don't have money to finance those engineers to build houses but through my efforts and through volunteering I can help them in my own little way. They call us BAYANI because we do it not just for our self, not just for others but for our country as well."

— CRIS HARVEN SOTTO,
WMSU PolSci Student & GK Youth

"Gusto kong makatulong sa mga nangangailangan na mga tao para mapaunlad ang ating sambayan."

— ARNEL BAYONA,
LBC Delivery Associate
, Zamboanga City

ILOILO (Tugbungan)

The town of Tugbungan in Iloilo is the 22nd town to take part in Barangay Walang Iwanan this summer. For Team Iloilo, inclusive growth is about including the least, the last, and the lost in our society, and this is why we want to make the Bayani Challenge as widespread as possible.

In the spirit of caring for one's hometown, volunteers gamely participated in the Tubungan town cleanup.

The Paraisong Pambata activities were also in full force, as volunteers headed to Talento Elementary School, Buenavista Elementary School, and Lanag Norte Elem School for some storytelling, fun games, and feeding.

Meanwhile, GK Volunteer and City Councilor Jason Gonzales also held a Paraisong Pambata workshop that included 215 participants from the city's barangay tanods, day care workers and nanays. In his words: "The conclusion to this summer's Paraisong Pambata teacher training series on Powerful Storytelling. Thank you to the volunteers who made it happen, and the mothers who courageously shared their stories."

And because the Bayani Challenge is also about fun and games, volunteers got to participate in the many versions of the "Laro ng Lahi," from the sack race to the longest line.

Lastly, the Tubungan Kalinga Night was participated in enthusiastically by different government agencies and schools. As part of the night, each agency/school also raised funds for another set of Paraisong Pambata activities, hoping to feed 700-800 kids and to buy school supplies for not less than 300 kids.
