Bayani Challenge Overview

Since it was first held in 2006, volunteers have looked forward to each year’s Bayani Challenge as their heroic response to whatever continues to threaten the poorest of the poor. More than an event, the Bayani Challenge is a 5-day test of courage, endurance and love for country. As it continues to grow every year, more and more volunteers and nation-builders from all over the world have responded to the GK Bayani Challenge.



2006
A Race to Rebuild a Nation

Participants: 400 volunteers
Impact: 25 families
Location: St Bernard, Southern Leyte


The 1st Bayani Challenge was born from the heroic response of 400 GK volunteers who helped rebuild the lives of the mudslide victims of Ginsaugon, St. Bernard, Southern Leyte. Watch the video HERE.





2007
Rebolusyon ng Pag-asa

Participants: 3,000 volunteers
Impact: 230 families
Location: Camarines Sur (Goa, Calabanga, Naga), Albay (Taysan), Marinduque (Buenavista, Gasan) and Sorsogon, (Prieto Diaz)


Volunteers built homes for 230 families in the provinces of Albay, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon and Marinduque – areas which were devastated by typhoon Reming.

2008
The More We Sweat for Peace,
The Less We Bleed in War

Participants: 1,500 volunteers
Impact: 75 families
Location: Bukidnon (Malaybalay, Kitaotao, Maramag, Dangcagan) and Lanao Del Sur (Wao)


Volunteers bravely ventured into conflict-ridden areas of Mindanao not just with the goal to give care to poor Muslim families, but with hope to build brotherhood and peace between Christians and Muslims.

2009
Only For The Brave

Participants: 1,100 volunteers
Impact: 73 families
Location: Sulu (Panglima Estino) and Zamboanga


GK sows seeds of peace in Sulu and Zamboanga. This captured the boldness of spirit of heroes who built hand in hand with Muslim and Christian brothers in Panglima Estino. Watch the video HERE.



2010
Explore. Build. Protect.

Participants: 1,200 volunteers
Impact: 70 families
Location: Palawan (Bataraza)


Volunteers raced against time to build homes not only to restore the dignity of the poorest of the poor in Palawan but also to foster care for the environment. Watch the video HERE.





2011
Kalinga sa Bayan

Participants: 2,000 volunteers
Impact: 130 families
Location: Bantayan Island, Cebu


Bayani Challenge went beyond merely building houses and included other activities such as a farm build, school build, health mission, island greening and Paraisong Pambata. Watch the video HERE.




2012
Pilipinas Ngayon Na!

Participants: 10,000 volunteers
Impact: 2,000 families
Location: Masbate, Mindoro, Negros Oriental, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan


GK and Pilipinas Natin of the Presidential Communications Operations Office, together with the local government, brought the  Bayani Challenge to a whole new level by expanding from just building homes in 5 days to caring for 5 different hometowns. Watch the video HERE. Visit the BC2012 page.


2013
Isang Bayan Isang Bayanihan

Participants: 80,000 volunteers
Location: 33 provinces (37 sites) in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao (including Typhoon Pablo-affected Cateel and Compostela Valley)


With the massive number of participants and multiple locations nationwide, this Bayani Challenge is the biggest volunteer movement in the history of the Philippines. Organized by GK and Pilipinas Natin in partnership with government agencies, LGUs, and the private sector, various nation-building activities (e.g.  house builds, coastal cleanup, education sessions for children) were simultaneously conducted from March 23-27. 2014
Walang Iwanan

Participants: 1,751,518 volunteers
Location: 12 provinces (110 sites)


From April 9 (Day of Valor) to June 12, 2014 (Independence Day) across 110 sites, we saw GK, national and local government, private partners, volunteers of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds, GK residents, and the disaster survivors (Typhoon Haiyan, Bohol earthquake, Zamboanga siege) themselves make time, come together, and show what it means to leave no one behind.
