GK Bayani Challenge 2011 Day 4 & 5: Miracle of Solidarity
[Date Created: April 21, 2011]

One thousand seven hundred heroes once again converged at the Santa Fe Central School on April 8. Not only Bantayan Island was transformed, hearts were also opened as each and everyone recalled their experience from the past days and build relationships with their assigned groups, fellow participants as well as with the Bantayanons.

“Tonight we end as a team,” said Luis Oquinena, Gawad Kalinga executive director, speaker during the culminating night. “We have to begin committing to a dream, a dream that we can build a country,” he said letting everyone know that the event is a manifestation of how anyone can give time, treasure and talent to show their love for others. And that the battle to end poverty does not end there but begins in the hearts of those having the courage to care and took part in the Bayani Challenge 2011 in Cebu.

Photos and a video of the past days were presented. The Bayanihan spirit was evident as they all push themselves to work under the sweltering heat of the sun to help the people of Bantayan Island.  Oquinena also acknowledged all the participants from the different countries as well as those from various provinces of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. He also thanked everyone who worked hard to make the Bayani Challenge 2011 successful.

Winners of the special events were also named. Bayanihan Race: Team Iligan (first place), RCY Cebu (second place), and Team Negros (third place). Master Kusinero: Team Australia (first place), Team USA (second place), and Team Masbate (third place).

Oquinena also announced that the next Bayani Challenge will be held in five different provinces next year namely:   Compostela Valley, Ormoc,  Mindoro Occidental,  Masbate, Lanao Del Norte.

“As we build team GK we will build solidarity. It is through that solidarity we will demonstrate that God is living in our hearts,” he said.

A youth summit was also held in the afternoon and team and youth leaders attended the gathering.   The day before, April 7, the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) in partnership with Gawad Kalinga, launched the Pilipinas Natin project in Bantayan Island with PCOO secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma.  Six Cycle Mind also performed that same night and joined the island activities the following day which was the last day of the Bayani Challenge 2011.
