First GK Sipag Futbol Festival
[Date Created: May 5, 2012]

The first ever GAWAD KALINGA SIPAG FUTBOL FESTIVAL will be held this May 12, 2012 (Saturday) from 7-5 PM at the BNS Parade Grounds, Marine Barracks Rudiardo Brown, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. The football festival will gather players and family members from 10 identified communities, and will be graced by the Secretary General of the Asian Football Confederation from Kuala Lumpur as well as officials from the Philippine Football Federation. The festival will bring together underprivileged youth ages 8 to 16 and their parents to one venue, in an effort to showcase to them the value of sports in GK’s holistic community development model.

The GK SipaG Futbol Festival will also serve as a launch to the program’s football league called “Liga GK Futbol” which will last for 6 months. The gathering will build up the excitement of players and parents for football. It will also invite speakers to come in and talk about values, livelihood opportunities through football (such as coaching and refereeing), academic scholarships (through testimonies from existing football scholars), talks on children’s rights and counseling through other NGO partners, and a parents forum on how to properly raise and treat their kids who are active in sports.

About GK SipaG

Empowering underprivileged youth through GK SipaG

The GK SipaG (GK SipaG) is a special project under the Child & Youth Development program of Gawad Kalinga (GK) that seeks to develop youth through sports, specifically football/soccer. We hope to motivate underprivileged children in our communities to enroll in school, improve their grades, and attend values formation sessions (conducted by Gawad Kalinga) through sports. In so doing, we hope to transform these children into productive members of society. “Sipag” the Filipino word for “diligence”, is the main value that the program would like to promote to its youth participants, their parents, and the communities where they live. “Sipa” is the Filipino word for “to kick”, and captures the grassroots football component of the program.
