GK MALARIA (SILVER HEIGHTS) |
|
During the Marcos regime, a National Housing Authority (NHA)-Administered Resettlement Program which involved the acquisition and development of large tracts of raw land generated service lots or core housing units. The program was intended for families displaced from sites earmarked for government infrastructure projects and those occupying danger areas such as waterways, esteros and railroad tracks.
Henceforth, “Bukid Area” of Caloocan City became one of the sites chosen by the government to relocate our less fortunate fellow Filipinos, particularly those coming from the congested City of Manila and those affected by some government projects. In 2011, a painful experience worsened their condition when the area was hit by a fire, totally destroying all the houses built by NHA. Gawad Kalinga started bringing hope to this place with a multi-sectoral effort initiated by GK, Parish of St. Joseph, Barangay 185 and the City of Caloocan. The Parish Priest also became the Project Director, which is a first for GK.
This tight-knit community is one of our model communities that has truly shown the values of solidarity, excellence, and "Walang Iwanan." The families have decided to transfer to their new homes together as a community even if some were already finished as early as 2011. Finally last December 2013, the community moved into their new homes. |

Bawat Pilipino Bayani
Two seemingly different groups of people who came together in one community to be a family to each other. It proves that no matter where we are in the world and where we are in life, as long as we are capable of loving, we can be heroes to one another. Our time, talent and treasure, however small we deem it to be, all converge in our endeavor to build a better people and a better nation.
