Nearly 3,800 Citi Volunteers in the Philippines Join Colleagues in 93 Countries to Celebrate Citi’s 10th Annual Global Community Day
[Date Created: July 8, 2015]

Annual Event Contributed More than Two Million Hours of Service Since Launch

Manila – Citi celebrated its 10th annual Global Community Day on June 13, with more than 75,000 Citi volunteers in 487 cities spanning 93 countries and territories engaging in service activities to benefit their local communities.

In the days leading up to and including Global Community Day, Citi colleagues, alumni, clients, family and friends worked side-by-side on more than 1,200 service projects ranging from urban revitalization to literacy and education, career readiness, environmental conservation and disaster relief. In the Philippines, Citi volunteers joined feeding programs, painted schoolrooms, and provided mentoring to micro business owners among others.

Over the past ten years, Citi volunteers have participated in more than 11,000 Global Community Day activities and contributed more than two million hours of service.

In the Philippines, Global Community Day was warmly embraced by employees when it was launched in 2005.  The volunteers share the day of service not only with colleagues but also families and friends, and take the opportunity not only to give back, but also learn the needs of the communities and how they can help beyond Global Community Day.

“Each year, we are delighted to see more and more employees raising their hands to do volunteer work.  So much so that we don’t hold volunteer activities only on one day, but as many as four weekends,” related Aneth Ng-Lim, Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Citizenship for Citi in the Philippines.  “We are also grateful to our long-time partners that welcome us each year and open up opportunities for us to serve.  This year, that list includes Bayan Academy, Childhope Philippines, Gawad Kalinga, Habitat for Humanity, Museo Pambata, Philippine Business for Social Progress, and the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled.

Mga Bayani ng Citi

Gawad Kalinga has been supporting Citi Philippines for Global Community Day since its inception, and their partnership is rooted on a common mission to uplift the plight of underserved communities. In 2015, Citi Philippines mobilized more than 200 volunteers and rendered nearly 2,000 volunteer hours in Gawad Kalinga communities that served 1,800 beneficiaries. The volunteers got immersed in building homes in Dasmarinas, Cavite, enhancing sustainable social enterprises in Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan and feeding public school children in Quezon City.

Gawad Kalinga Dasmarinas, Cavite welcomed Citi volunteers who laid hollow blocks,
mixed cement to help build homes for our partners.

Citi volunteers cooked nutritious food and prepared lunch boxes for the public school children in Quezon City.

"We need to build an army of volunteers and partners who truly understand what caring and sharing is really about. Citi has been journeying with us by inculcating that same culture to their employees through the years.” said Jose Luis Oquinena, Gawad Kalinga Executive Director.
