#PARA SA EASTERNSAMAR
BAYANI CHALLENGE 2016
GK Carmen Village in Hernani, Eastern Samar will be home to 200 families who are rebuilding their lives more than two years after Supertyphoon Haiyan.
“There is a time to speak of the pain and reflect on the past, but for the next five days, it is our time to build, rebuild, and aspire for the future. We will be building alongside you.”
- Kuya Luis Oquinena, GK Executive Director
Pagsalubong sa isang makulay na kinabukasan
Disaster resilience is about people. More than two years after Supertyphoon Haiyan, the people of Hernani, Eastern Samar continue to rebuild their lives, and for the five days of Bayani Challenge, they were joined by volunteers from all over to help build houses and make the future as hopeful and as colorful as it can be.
Hunger ends where caring begins
“I asked them to draw what they wanted to be when they grow up. Some wanted to be nurses, some wanted to be soldiers, and some wanted to be doctors. But only one said he’d be a fisherman.
I salute this little boy’s hope in making something of himself in the future and his courage to make the career of being a fisherman lucrative.
Yesterday, he was a kid who I simply met. Today, he is my inspiration. Tomorrow, he’ll be everyone’s hero.”
- KC Calleja, GK worker
Kusina ng Kalinga Hernani team also joined the bayanihan cooking nutritious meals not just for volunteers, but also for the 1500 children who participated in paraisong pambata activities held in different barangays. Children got extra doses of kalinga moments as their tummies got filled with good food, and their hearts with memories of ates and kuyas joining them in drawing, dancing, playtime, storytelling, and dreaming.

Kuya Randy, Kuya Aldrin, and Kuya Eymard from GK Pago and Maribi in Tanauan, Leyte became friends while fulfilling their 1,500 hours of sweat equity. But now that they already have a home, they’re here to pay it forward.

Kahit malayo man ako, pupuntahan ko kayo at makikita niyo ako.
