ABOUT GK NEWS OF HOPE GET INVOLVED

BAYANI ON WHEELS is a group of Gawad Kalinga volunteers and cyclists, that aims to bring bicycles to Typhoon Yolanda-affected areas in the Visayas. Last April and May 2014, they cycled more than 100km across Leyte, between Tacloban and Ormoc, to raise funds and help build GK communities.

Since then, Bayani on Wheels volunteers have been bike-voluntouring in support of the different GK programs and the Bayani Challenge: an annual event that showcases heroism through nation-building.

Together we can…
Bike to build a community… and end poverty.
Bike to feed a child… and end hunger.
May it be mountain, road, folding, fixie or fatbike…
we can all be #BayaniOnWheels

The Journey So Far

August 2015

LIFE ON WHEELS
Volunteer Story

“Remember, when we post pictures during this ride, let’s always use #EndPoverty,” said Maurice ‘Mau’ Alcantara, the team leader for Bayani on Wheels, before we set out on a bike ride of 170 km to Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija.

By the end of the first day we pedaled a total of 115 km and took a much-needed rest in Cabanatuan City, where we were fortunate to be greeted by Leihana (from the Finance department of Human Nature) and offered free food, because it was her birthday the day before. On the second day and just around 20 km away from our destination, we found ourselves taking a break from our bike ride and wading/splashing by the river. Clearly enjoying this side trip, we jokingly voiced out, ‘How exactly is this ending poverty?’”

#BC2015 update: School refurbishing in Brgy. Malinaw. We visited a Dumagat tribe who makes handwoven crafts made of Cogon. They sell the plate for 20pesos each. They can make up to 4pcs a day. They have the skills but lack the proper market to sell it. Maybe we can help it promoting or selling it?”

Bayani on Wheels Bike Turnover
Tanauan, Leyte

Nothing is impossible when you do it for God and country. Thank you for all your help and pledges! 100+ bikes were donated to GK Pago and the service team. These were fishermen heavily affected by Typhoon Yolanda and relocated by GK to safer ground. Now, they don't have to walk for an hour just to reach the sea. 15 bikes were also given to the municipality of Tanauan, Leyte as requested by Mayor Pel Tecson for their PNP Bike Patrol. The rest of the bikes will be distributed to other GK Leyte sites that need it most.

"After Typhoon Yolanda, I heard that the fisherfolks in Tanauan, Leyte were relocated and were having a hard time since their new place was very far from the sea which was the source of their livelihood. That's when me and my fellow bike enthusiasts decided to raise bicycles to help them through Gawad Kalinga's Disaster Response Program. We were overwhelmed with the response. More than 295 families were given bicycles."

- Mau Alcantara, Bike Enthusiast & Co-Founder of Bayani On Wheels
